What’s going down your drain?

< Back to Advice

Wet wipes and fats are causing blockages in your drains and pumping stations. At worst this will result in sewers flooding. We’re guessing you don’t want to find your home or garden flooded with sewage. You can help prevent this by only flushing the 3 P’s – Poo, pee and paper

Things we’ve found in our system!

  • Paint cans
  • Wet wipes
  • Rags
  • Money
  • Kids toys

All of your usual offenders are there too:

  • Sanitary products
  • Wet wipes
  • Condoms
  • Food scraps which have been washed away down the drain without a second thought!
  • Accumulation of fats, oils and greases – which have solidified in your pipework.

The truth behind what you flush?

These actions are having a huge impact on your network and pumping stations. The network and pumping stations are only designed to deal with the 3 P’s – Poo, pee and paper! Any other items will cause a huge issue.

Please dispose of your waste responsibly.

We have found rags wrapped around the impellers in the pumping stations, this comes from what is being poured down the sinks or flushed down the toilet, resulting in less effective pumping stations.

We all need the pumping stations to be working at optimum level for them to be reliable and be working at satisfactory levels to deal with human waste.

The majority of sewer blockages are caused by inappropriate items being poured down sinks and flushed down toilets. Unfortunately, it is all of our customers that will end up paying for the offenses through increases in their water bills.

How can you prevent blockages?

It’s simple, only flush the 3 P’s:

  • Poo,
  • pee and
  • Paper
