Water Efficient Garden

Saving water in your garden is just as important as saving water in your home. Using water wisely and being water efficient helps the environment and will save you money on your water bill.

Here are our tips to help you look after your garden during the summer:

Learn to love your brown lawn. Grass doesn’t need as much water as you think. If your lawn goes brown, it will soon bounce back when it rains again. Try not to cut your lawn too often during dry periods leaving your grass a bit longer and leaving cuttings on will help retain moisture.

Invest in a water butt – Thousands of litres of water fall on your roof every single year a water butt catches rainwater which can be reused to water your garden.

Using a watering can instead of a hosepipe will save water in turn saving you money.
Water your plants in the morning or last thing at night when it’s cooler. This can help to prevent water loss. Always aim for the base of the plant to ensure your plants get the full benefit of the water you give them.

Using a mulch around your plants or using water storing crystals in your pots and hanging baskets can help to lock in the moisture during dry periods.

Re-use water from cooking pasta or vegetables or when running your taps for hot/cold water. Allow the water to cool down and collect water you would otherwise waste into a container to use in your garden.

Keep on top of weeds in your flower beds as they will compete with your flowers and plants for moisture.
Did you know that over watering your plants can weaken their roots? Try watering your plants less frequently to allow your plants to develop a deep root system.

Please remember, if you’ve seen a reduction in water pressure, that demand for water is very high during the summer months.
