What to look for?
- Water tastes and smells musty, earthy or stale. This is often more noticeable first thing in the morning or when the water supply in the property has not been used for a period of time.
Ask yourself…
Does the water still smell or taste unpleasant if you fill a glass and move away from the sink?
No – The issue could be caused by the waste trap in the sink rather than the water. By running the tap the water is disturbing the waste trap or u-bend. We recommend trying to clean the sink trap and drain to resolve the issue.
If yes does the taste or smell clear when you run the tap for a while before use?
No – If running your taps does not resolve the issue, ask your neighbours if they’ve noticed anything. Occasionally there can be a low turnover of water in the mains, especially at the end of the main or in isolated areas. Please get in touch with us and we will investigate this issue. We may need to flush the mains to remove any water that’s not being used promptly.
Yes – The taste and smell can be caused by microbes, which grow in the water where it is slow flowing or has been left in the pipe for a long period of time. This is usually an issue in the supply pipe not the water mains itself.

To clear any water that has been sitting in the pipework we recommend running your taps for a short time before use.
