My water tastes woody?

Woody

What to look for?

  • Water tastes and smells woody
  • The taste and smell disappears after running the tap for a few minutes

What could cause this?

This can happen if your supply pipe is made from a black plastic material commonly called alkathene. Some of the first black plastic pipes were made from this material which was commonly used in 1960’s and 1970’s. However, it was found that chemicals leach from these pipes which can then cause the water to have a woody taste and/or smell.

Just remember…

It’s important to know that that woody tastes and smells are not harmful to you.

Self Help

You can flush the taps for a couple of minutes before use which should reduce the taste. By running the taps, you are clearing any water that’s been standing in your supply pipe. This is only a short-term solution and if you wish to remove the issue completely you will need to replace your pipework.
