Stains and Slime

Stains & Slime

What to look for?

  • Bits in the water which are slimy to touch
  • Staining on grouting between tiles, or where water sits in the bathroom
  • Black slime on your taps and/or shower head
  • Black slime or staining in your washing machine soap drawer or around the door seal
  • Black slime or staining on sponges or flannels
  • Staining in the toilet cistern or around the rim of the toilet

Why is this happening?

The staining or slime isn’t actually because of the water supply, it is caused by airborne mould spores that like to grow in damp conditions.

It is important to keep on top of cleaning areas that mould spores are likely to grow, this should keep the ‘food’ supply for the mould spores to a minimum.

Self Help

Make sure the room is aired out regularly this can be done by installing an extraction fan or simply opening a window.
Clean with mild bleach regularly to prevent the spores growing back.
Remove limescale where possible, as it gives the spores something to hold onto.
Try not to use air fresheners or aerosols in areas with damp conditions like the bathroom as the chemicals in these products give the spores nutrients, enabling them to grow.
